If you are experiencing larger than normal male breasts, you are not alone.
The fact of the matter is almost 40% of the male population will experience extreme breast growth during some point in their lives. Sometimes the condition will resolve on its own, as hormones shift back into balance, but not always. In this case, the best option for correction may be a male breast reduction.
While at first the surgery may seem intimidating, understanding the procedure can ease fears and make a Male Breast Reduction a viable, restorative choice. Before Surgery: In preparation for your Male Breast Reduction, go over your current medications with Dr. Vitenas, he will let you know which need to be stopped before surgery. Smoking can cause delayed wound healing, so should be stopped two weeks before the Male Breast Reduction, and not resumed until six weeks after.
The Surgical Procedure: The Male Breast Reduction is performed as an outpatient surgical procedure. Dr. Vitenas uses the Day Surgery Center at Memorial Hospital Southeast; located adjacent to our office suite. Performed under general anesthesia, Dr. Vitenas has a Board Certified Anesthesiologist in the surgical suite at all times. Dr. Vitenas may perform Liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue and contour the chest.
If glandular tissue is present, as well, he will make an incision around the nipple, and excise unwanted skin and fat. The nipple is then repositioned to look natural and proportionate; then the breast sutured tight. Most scarring from a Male Breast Reduction will be concealed within the natural lines of the chest. Although some may be visible, scars usually fade well over time.
The Recovery Period: The recovery from a Male Breast Reduction should take between seven and ten days; although patients usually feel well enough to return to work in one week or less. Some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort may be experienced over the first few days, but appropriate mediations will be prescribed to keep you comfortable. The results from your Male Breast Reduction will be immediately apparent, but they will continue to improve over several weeks, as the swelling continues to subside.
